Background of the Study
Cultural norms play a crucial role in shaping the pragmatic expressions within any language, and the Yoruba language in Abeokuta is no exception. In Yoruba discourse, pragmatic expressions such as greetings, honorifics, and indirect requests are imbued with culturally specific meanings that reflect longstanding traditions and social hierarchies (Olu, 2023). These expressions not only facilitate effective communication but also reinforce social bonds and cultural identity. In Abeokuta, where community and tradition are deeply valued, the use of culturally informed pragmatic expressions is integral to maintaining respect and social order. However, the advent of modernization and globalization has introduced alternative communication styles that may conflict with traditional norms (Akinola, 2024). As a result, there is growing concern that the traditional pragmatic repertoire may be eroding, leading to ambiguities and a loss of cultural depth. This study investigates how cultural norms influence pragmatic expressions in Yoruba and examines the impact of modern influences on these practices, aiming to propose strategies for preserving traditional communication forms.
Statement of the Problem
Contemporary changes in social norms and communication styles in Abeokuta are affecting the traditional pragmatic expressions of the Yoruba language. The infusion of modern, direct communication methods is challenging the established cultural norms that have long governed respectful and indirect expression (Olu, 2023). This shift may result in a dilution of culturally rich pragmatic cues and misunderstandings in interpersonal interactions (Akinola, 2024). Despite the importance of these expressions in reinforcing social identity and cohesion, limited research has addressed how modernization is influencing their usage. This study aims to evaluate the impact of cultural and modern influences on Yoruba pragmatic expressions, highlighting potential areas of erosion and proposing strategies to preserve traditional forms.
Objectives of the Study
To analyze the role of cultural norms in shaping Yoruba pragmatic expressions.
To assess the impact of modern influences on these expressions in Abeokuta.
To propose measures to preserve traditional pragmatic forms.
Research Questions
How do cultural norms influence Yoruba pragmatic expressions in Abeokuta?
What modern influences are altering these expressions?
What strategies can preserve traditional pragmatic expressions?
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it examines the influence of cultural norms on pragmatic expressions in the Yoruba language in Abeokuta, offering insights into the interplay between tradition and modernity. The findings will aid educators, cultural custodians, and policymakers in preserving culturally rich communication practices. By understanding how modern influences affect pragmatic expressions, strategies can be developed to maintain effective and respectful communication that reflects traditional values (Olu, 2023; Akinola, 2024).
